Ralph Metzner was an undoubted pioneer of the consciousness explosion of the mid-twentieth century. He worked at Harvard with psychedelic pioneers Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (later Ram Dass) and wrote this classic in 1971, which is republished here with all its original diagrams. At the time people’s minds were being opened up and they were full of enthusiasm to explore new ways of continuing their journeys and Metzner describes in some detail and with deep knowledge six disciplines available to help with this: I Ching, Tantra, Tarot, Alchemy, Astrology and Actualism. The latter is the only discipline that isn’t well-known today. This is a great primer on these fields from one of the great minds and you can pick up on the optimism of the time when it was first published.
